Apple snow leopard OS is out Friday

Apple Inc. announced today that its Snow Leopard Mac OS X upgrade will go on sale this Friday, slightly earlier than the Cupertino company previously indicated.

And for Apple fans who can't even wait until Friday, Apple's online store and Amazon.com began accepting pre-orders Monday morning.

During the Worldwide Developer's Conference in June, Apple said Snow Leopard would be available in September, so the company is giving itself a head start.

Apple, which is heavily touting how Snow Leopard will support Microsoft Exchange Server 2007, also wants to get further ahead of Microsoft's planned October 22 release of its new Windows 7 operating system

Analyst Gene Munster of Piper Jaffray has reportedly estimated Apple will sell five million copies of Snow Leopard, worth about $66 to the company's bottom line, for the September quarter..

Snow Leopard costs $29 for existing Leopard users or $49 for a single-household, five-user family pack. But for users of the older Tiger operating system running on an Intel-based Mac, jumping to Snow Leopard will cost $169, with a family pack costing $229.
